Martin Grimes - Trumpet / Cornet
The Brass Players

Martin started playing Cornet in 1969 at the age of 7 for his local band, Hoyland Town, Barnsley, more recently known as Ireland Alloys and now Strata Brass.

In 1978 Martin furthered his playing career with a move to Barrow Colliery Band (Barnsley Building Society Barrow Band) as assistant Principal Cornet and had a very successful period with the band under the baton of Brian Dyson.

A further move took Martin to Rockingham Colliery Band again as assistant principal, this time to Derek Renshaw where he picked up many valuable tips before returning to Barrow Colliery Band then under the leadership of Stephen Sykes.

Another successful period with the band, including prizes for winning the National Quartet Championship in 1985.

In the early 90?s Martin joined the ranks of the Championship Section with UES Stocksbridge band under the baton of Graham O?Connor. Whilst at the band Martin played at numerous prestigious events and contests, most notably a tour of Australia during 1985.

Following this, Chapeltown Silver Band offered Martin the opportunity to play as their principal cornet for two years before he then returned to ASDA Stocksbridge Band.

Again success, with Derek Renshaw as conductor, winning two Yorkshire Area?s back to back in 2000 and 2001 and becoming National 1st section Champions.

A move to Flugel with the Hatfield Band gave Martin the opportunity to perform as an accomplished soloist as well as competing again in the Championship Section as the band was promoted, gaining a notable 2nd place in the Yorkshire Area and earning a place in the National Finals at the RAH.

November 2003 saw Martin move to Grimethorpe on 2nd Cornet - Particular highlights for Martin were playing to a 45,000 strong audience at the Proms in the Park concert of 2004, and the back-to-back area wins of 2005 and 2006.

"I have enjoyed my time with all the bands I have had the privilege to be part of, and I hope the future with the brass players is just as happy and successful" - M Grimes
